Myanmar (formerly Burma) is a country in Southeast Asia, located in the western part of the Indochina Peninsula. Myanmar is a multi-religious country; the vast majority of the population — 89 % - is Buddhist (Theravada school). Theravada is the oldest existing school of Buddhism. This school is generally closer to early Buddhism than other existing Buddhist traditions. For more than a millennium, Theravada has focused on preserving the dharma in the form of texts and tends to be very conservative on matters of doctrine and monastic discipline.
After the Second World War (during which Myanmar was subjected to Japanese occupation), the country gained independence, formalized by a treaty with Great Britain in 1948. In 1962, the Socialist Republic of Burma Union was established, which lasted until the coup of 1988. The country was ruled by a military dictatorship, which formally ended in 2011. Burma is a country rich in jade and precious stones, oil, natural gas and other minerals.
